Tony Scott’s controversial debut picture is the Blade Runner of female vampire movies set in Manhattan: a core genre piece launching the postmodern Hollywood fiestas of the 1980s (Near Dark, The Lost Boys, Vamp), from Whitley Strieber’s famous patchwork it is at the same time a heartbreaking love story about three immortal lovers (the thousand-year-old vampire goddess replaces her wrinkled paramour acolyte for the female dream-researching doctor), and one of the most magnificent style parades of any horror film from the ecstatic Bauhaus concert overture through the bold bedroom scene featuring Deneuve and Sarandon to the carnival finale of the living dead. Whether ‘agonizingly bad’ (Roger Ebert) or a ‘masterpiece of the genre’ (Camille Paglia), the jury is still out – but it should only ever be viewed on the big screen.
